Dewi Rengganis was said to have been very devastated when she was separated from her one true love Ki Santang. For years the couple searched for each other until they finally met at the exact spot that is now called the Love Stone. The legend is also what gives the lake its name, which,in the  Sunda language, “Pateangan-teangan” literally translated means “searching for each other”, that later turned into “Patengan”.
