Wayang in Symphony : “Makutharama” (Rama’s Crown)

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of  the Lontar Foundation–an organization dedicated to the preservation of  Indonesia’s literature and culture, the Orkes Simfoni Jakarta or the Jakarta Symphony Orchestra will present a one of a kind musical concert entitled Wayang in Symphony , featuring the drama “Makutharama”  (Rama’s Crown) at the Jakarta Theatre, Taman Ismail Marzuki Art Center, Jakarta on 24th November 2012.

Wayang in Symphony is the first and only show that colaborates western classical music with Indonesian traditional literary theater.  It is like Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliette symphony for orchestra being played for Indonesia’s own wayang tales of ‘Makhutarama’. The concert itself is inspired by the book of “Makutharama” which will be published in three languages, namely in English, Bahasa Indonesia, and Javanese.

The Javanese shadow play Makutharama tells the story revolving around the special heavenly revelation (wahyu) that is capable of bestowing to its owner glory, honor, and power, altogether  known as Makutharama (Rama’s Crown). According to the story, whoever manages to possess Rama’s Crown will rule the kingdom of Hastinapura, thus causing the inevitable bitter wars among the royal family, between the Pandawa brothers and their Kurawa cousins. This particular wahyu, known as Rama’s Crown (Makutharama) contains eight elements (hasta brata) of the natural world that serve as model for a country’s leader.

The symphonic orchestra will perform compositions inspired by the teachings of Hasta Brata which forms the essence of the Makutharama story. The Hasta Brata elements themselves comprise the Sun, Moon, Star, Wind, Earth, Water, and Fire. According to the story, these were teachings passed on to the candidate leader Arjuna (one of the Pandawa brothers) as expressed by Begawan Kesawasidi , an incarnation of God Kresna.

This special performance features some of the most prominent maestros in Indonesia’s performing art scene including Jose Rizal Manua as Director, Ki Joko “Lemasz” Suprayitno as Composer/Arranger, and Yudianto Hinupurwadi as Conductor, with  producers Lontar Foundation and Neneng Rahardja.
