The picturesque Lake Sentani in the heart of Papua will come alive with festivities as the Sentani Lake Cultural Festival 2013 gets underway from 19th to 23rd June 2013. The four days cultural fiesta will be centered at Kalkhote Beach, Ohei Village, East Sentani, Jayapura Regency, the province of Papua.
Held for the first time in 2008, the festival has attracted more and more visitors over the years. Last year, the festival successfully attracted 48,548 visitors from all over Indonesia and abroad.
Entering its 5th edition, this year, the festival features the theme “One for All” as an expression of unity among all communities who live around Lake Sentani.
As in previous years, the event will showcase the abundance cultural wealth of the tribes living around Lake Sentani which will be presented both on land and on the water. The festival will also introduce regional songs, handicrafts, culinary contests and hair braiding as features of local culture. The festival’s main attraction is the Tour of Lake Sentani, an opportunity for tourists to go sightseeing around the lake, covering an area of 9,630 hectares in four districts and providing a source of living for 25,000 people.
This year, the festival will also feature a special war dance on boats which will be performed by over 1000 dancers from 26 villages. There will also be an inland war dance performance. The war dance and parade have always been an essential and sacred part of the festival.
