Event: Komodo Carnival 2013Labuan Bajo, the small port town gateway to Komodo Island, will be filled with festivities when the Komodo Carnival 2013 is held from 1st to 3rd September 2013.

As the name suggests, giant replicas of Komodo dragons and various other prehistoric animals will be paraded through the streets of Labuan Bajo as main highlight.

Komodo Carnival will also feature traditional art and cultural performances including the fascinating Caci traditional Martial Art. Various handicrafts, souvenirs, and artworks will also be showcased during the event. Collaborating ethnic groups living in the area surrounding the island of the legendary Komodo dragons, the event is aimed to further promote all the wonders in and around Komodo Island.

The Komodos, real life dragons, are a sight indeed. Gigantic, the lizards grow to about two or three meters in length and easily weigh about 165 kilograms. Despite their huge size and awesome appearance, they are not active hunters. What makes these animals intimidating is the fact that they are patient predators. In the wild, they stalk a victim, usually a weak or injured animal. One venomous bite, that's what it usually takes. After following the victim for a while, sometimes up to several days until their prey is dying, then the komodos descend on the victim in a group to completely devour it together.

The Komodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is an endangered species which can only be found in the Komodo National Park (KNP) in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Because of the unique and rare nature of this animal, KNP was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.
