Addressing the importance of hygiene, health, sanitation, and toilet related issues, the World Toilet Summit 2013 will take place at the Sunan Hotel Solo, Surakarta (Solo), Central Java, from 2nd to 4th October 2013.
Featuring the theme "The Rural Meet the Urban Sanitation", the World Toilet Summit 2013 aims to empower the community by improving better sanitation to alleviate poverty, health and hygiene in communities both in rural and urban society.
Speakers include Prof. Geoffrey Lipman, Assistant Secretary General and Spokesperson of UN Tourism Organization, Dr. Clara Greed, Emerita Professof of Inclusive Urban Planning, University of West England, Prof. Jan Olof, Phd, Linkoping University, Sweden, Dr. M. Balquni, MA, Head of Masters and Doctorate Program in Tourism Studies, University of Gajah Mada, Yogyakarta, and many more.
This annually organized event brings together non-profit organizations, government bodies, academia and other industry players to address the sanitation crisis that affects 2.5 billion people globally. The inaugural World Toilet Summit was held in Singapore and over the past 12 years the summit has been held across the globe. Previous summits were held in Seoul, Taipei, Beijing, Shanghai, Belfast, Moscow, Bangkok, New Delhi, Macau, Philadelphia, Hainan and Durban. With the voices of influential leaders of the world coming together, the World Toilet Summit brings an opportunity to bring hope to the 40% of the world’s population needing proper sanitation.
The Summit is presented by the World Toilet Organization (WTO) in collaboration with the Indonesia Toilet Association (ATI) and supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, the Ministry of Public Works, and the local Government of Surakarta.
The event will consists of 2 days Training the Trainers as Pre Event, the Welcome Dinner, The Summit; 2 days Plenary Session and 1 day Concurrent Tracks, Exhibition, Cultural Night and World Toilet Carnival.
Training the Trainers as Pre Event for World Toilet Summit will be held on 30 September -1 October 2013 and dedicated to all trainers ranging from government officials to private sectors in Indonesia.
The Summit itself will consist of 2 days Plenary Sessions with 15 interesting topics focusing on various topics such as Public Space, Hygiene, Poverty Alleviation through Tourism, Toilet as Catalyst, and other issues. The 1 day Concurrent Tracks will feature 25 topics which will be divided into 3 classes that discuss about 3 main topics in sanitation; School, Tourism, and Design & Technology sanitation. The Summit will involve some of the most reputable and competent national and international speakers from government and private sectors dealing in sanitation and toiletries industries. In the end of Summit, all delegates will have the opportunities to join Field Visit to see and feel directly the sanitation and toilet condition in some of the Tourist Destinations, Communal Toilets and School Sanitations. There will be 600 participants projected in these 3 days summit.
The event will also be complemented by a number of Social Programs including the Welcome Dinner which take place in one of the cultural heritage sites in Solo: Pendapi Gedhe Solo (Surakarta City Hall). At the end of the first day of summit, all delegates will have the opportunity to enjoy some of the most fascinating cultural and historical attractions of Solo and Central Java in the Cultural Night. Through the program, participants can enjoy various Javanese dances and traditional performances and also taste the delicious Javanese traditional culinary dishes at the historical site of the Mangkunegaran Palace. In World Toilet Carnival, all delegates are invited to join a thematic toilet parade along the main streets of Solo to promote and spread the awareness of hygiene and health sanitary in a unique way, together with students, and local public.
