Lake Toba Festival is fully supported by the province of North Sumatra and the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy.

The Festival will cover comprehensive activities from music, arts and crafts, to traditional sports competitions to tourism seminar and exhibitions. Among the diverse activities of the festival are: Solu Balon Dragon (Dragon Boat) competition, Lake Toba’s World Drum Festival, International and Folk’s Swimming Competition, Art and Cultural performances, Singing and Choir’s Competition, Rafting Competition, Fashion Show, Tourism Seminar, and Creative Tourism Exhibition. Through the festival, visitors will be presented with some of the most fascinating culture of the Batak ethnic group living around Lake Toba and the stunning Samosir Island such as the Tortor Dance and the intricate art of Ulos weaving.

Lake Toba is one of the most fascinating natural wonders of the world. Measurin over 1,145 square kilometers with a depth of 450 meters, Lake Toba is acknowledged as the largest lake in Southeast Asia and one of the deepest lakes in the world. Scientists have concluded that Lake Toba,  which is a crater lake,  was in fact created by one of the ancient earth’s mega explosions of a supervolcano. Many scientists believe that the supervolcanic event plunged the planet into a 6-to-10-years  of  volcanic winter.

The town of Parapat at the edge of Lake Toba is approximately 176 km from Medan and can be reached overland in about 6 hours. From Parapat, there are ferries available to reach Samosir Island, at the heart of Lake Tobe. The ferry leaves every hour and a half from 9 – 5pm. The two landing points on Samosir are at the traditional villages of Tomok and TukTuk, where the Samosir  island hotels and restaurants are concentrated.
