As time draws nearer to the Internationale Tourismus Börse (ITB) Berlin 2013 , - the world’s leading travel trade show, to take place from 6th to 10th March 2013,- INDONESIA, as ITB 2013 Official Partner Country, gears up to highlight the event with a special pavilion that uniquely features the icon of the Indonesian seafaring nation: the majestic Phinisi Sailing vessel.
Featuring the legendary Bugis Schooner as icon, the pavilion brings the concept of “Heart Matters” initiated by the Wonderful Indonesia Team. Combining the components of Heart, Earth, and Art, the “Heart Matters” concept expresses the perfect harmony of all the elements that intertwine and fuse into the wonderful paradise that is Indonesia.
The Phinisi Schooner was chosen since it represents all of the above three elements. The schooner is well-known as a sturdy vessel that has stood the test of time, the wind and the waves, which has been widely used by Indonesian seafarers since ancient times to sail across this beautiful archipelago. Thus, the Phinisi represents both the enchanting Indonesian seas as well as the seafaring culture of the people. Moreover, the ship’s distinct shape and features together form a distinguished work of art that portrays the indigenous wisdom of the Indonesian people as has been handed down through generations. This is proven by a relief of the vessel which was discovered carved on the stones of the magnificent 9th century Borobudur Temple.
Featuring the Phinisi Schooner as icon, Indonesia also aims to further promote the vast inter-island seas of the archipelago that hold immense natural treasures below and above the waters, creating unbelievable marine attractions , that include the Sail Bunaken, Sail Banda, and Sail Indonesia Regattas, just to name a few. While below the sea live the incredible underwater world of Raja Ampat, Wakatobi, the Komodo National Park, Derawan, and more.
The formulation of the Phinisi concept for the ITB Berlin 2013 Indonesia pavilion involved many parties including interior and exhibition designers, Communications concept experts, Graphic designers, and multimedia experts. The creative team is directed and assited by the promotional team of the Directorate General of Marketing of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy.
The construction of the pavilion itself will be undertaken by the official contractor of ITB Berlin. The pavilion’s floors will use laminated wood and carpets, added with an upper deck in the shape of the bow of the phinisi schooner. The structure’s steel poles will be covered with plywood, while the railing around the deck will use stainless steel to maintain a modern touch. The entire pavilion will be decorated with distinct carvings from the fabled island of Bali.
A replica of the forecastle of the Phinisi Schooner is made of wood with plywood coatings and will be placed at the front of the pavilion, while at many parts of the pavilion, the booths will feature the Phinisi‘s nuances. Complementing the Phinisi forecastle deck will be a giant multimedia LED screen on each side.
The pavilion is designed by Wilhelm Johannes, who graduated in 1984 from the Bandung’s Institute of Technology majoring in Product Design of the Art Faculty. Wilhelm himself previously has designed and constructed Indonesia’s pavilions for many events such as at the Shanghai World Expo China, and the Asean Fair at Nusa Dua, Bali.
