Indonesia has been voted  “The 2013 Best Holiday Destination outside Europe”, as polled among 150,000 voters on, one of the largest hotel booking websites located in the Netherlands, informed a press release from the Indonesian Embassy in the Hague.
The reasons given for Indonesia’s popularity were the country’s diverse culture, rich nature and beautiful scenery.
The award was handed to the Visit Indonesia Tourism Country Manager in the Netherlands, Susan van Egmond in Amsterdam on 22 April. is a popular travel website offering more than 280,000 hotels , 42,000 destinations in 24 countries around the globe. The web boasts 2 million users.
Other categories awarded included Best Tour Operator, Best Airline, Best Hotel and more.
Popular destinations for Europeans to Indonesia are Bali, and Borobudur and Yogyakarta, but more are travelling further afield to  emerging popular destinations like Lombok, Komodo, Toraja, but also to the more familiar islands across Java and Sumatra.
Some  10,279 Dutch tourists visited Indonesia in 2012. Statistics show that despite the economic slowdown in Europe, the number of European visitors to Indonesia continues to improve.
