Food Diary #1 in Yogyakarta - Temptation

For my 3.5 weeks trip back home, I decided to start a food diary to show you all the hard and heavy temptations I encountered during this trip.

So it started today. It was a beautiful and surprisingly cool morning in Yogyakarta. As everyone in the world acknowledge that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, people in Yogyakarta also take that seriously. I decided to treat myself sop ayam (chicken soup) with rice, chili sauce (sambal sop), empal, and crispy chicken from a small food stall just 10 minutes away from my house. It was definitely a hearty breakfast.

For lunch, I went to a mall near my campus. I just couldn’t resist the siomay there. It was used to be my lunch when I was still a student at the university, and yet today it still felt so heavenly in my mouth. Yum!

My best friend asked me if I wanted to go out for dinner with her and so I did. She took me to Monumen Jogja Kembali, which is a famous monument of Jogja. There was a food festival at that time. We ate batagor which consists of tofu and meat served with peanut butter sauce. Just to let you know, the portion was so small that we ordered another menu named tahu gimbal. It consists of tofu, rice wrapped in banana leaf (lontong), bakwan udang, egg, cabbage, bean sprouts and krupuk also served with peanut butter sauce and also petis which made it even more tasty. In addition, it is also completed with fresh chili as one of signature ingredients of Indonesians dishes.

We continued to see what else was interesting. We tried hakau dimsum, which was one of my favorites. I must say, it was quite delicious, although I had ever eaten better ones. We ended our culinary tour at the monument by trying my favorite childhood dessert called lekker. If you know Dutch, lekker literally means “yummy”. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, lekker is a name for a crispy pancake filled with all sorts of fillings. I chose banana, chocolate and cheese as the fillings.

I was going to call it a night when my best friend told me that a new gelatto bar was opened not far from where we were and she invited me to try it. I never say no to gelatto, so I obediently nodded to her proposal. There I had rum and raisin flavor and my friend ordered bloody orange flavor. It was the perfect end to my day. And I must say OH SO GOOD!
