Bandung for city dwellers & classic culinary lovers
« on: January 29, 2013, 09:25:19 AM »

With direct international flights from major cities in Asia, strings of factory outlets and new hip places to dine and unwind, you might agree that Bandung is now a cosmopolitan dwell. Visit Rumah Mode for branded clothes at heavy discount, brunch at Hummingbird, or spend your night out at Maja House. We compile a list of some of the finest places to visit in a compact itinerary for your next weekend trip, below.

Day 1

8.00 Morning jog and breakfast at GOR Padjajaran
Go straight to GOR Padjajaran and join locals for a morning run or tai chi session inside the classic stadium, or you can skip the sweaty session and go directly to the morning market full of local delicacies there. From the savory cakwe (chinese twisted dough), yummy bubur ikan (fish porridge) to kupat tahu Padalarang (rice cake with spicy coconut milk), begin your day with cheap and hearty breakfast here.

9.30-11.30 Walking tour around Asia-Africa & Braga
Catch a glimpse of colonial time around Jalan Asia Africa and Braga. Use comfortable shoes and prepare to take a lot of pictures as there are fascinating details to capture here. The art deco façade, the hundreds years old newspaper printing machine in front of Pikiran Rakyat office, the podium inside the KAA building where Nehru once stood and gave his famous speech and other dazzling remnants and structures from a bygone era.

12.00-13.30 Lunch around Asia Africa
Choose Mie Linggarjati (Jl. Balonggede 1) or Mie Naripan (Jl. Naripan 108) for classic Chinese noodles with a glass of fresh orange or avocado juice. Go to Lotek Kalipah Apo (Jl Kalipah Apo 42) -local eatery that is famous for its lotek (Sundanese salad with peanut sauce)- or the legendary Sundanese restaurant Rumah Makan Cikawao (Jl. Cikawao 7) for a complete lunch. Coffee snobs should pay a visit to Kopi Aroma (Jl. Banceuy 51), the oldest surviving coffee place in Bandung that’s been roasting Indonesian aged coffee since 1930s.

14.00-16.30 Check in at Savoy Homann Hotel or Grand Hotel Preanger
Now, it’s time to check in at one of the classic establishments in Bandung. We recommend you to stay at Savoy Homann (Jl. Asia Africa 112) or Grand Hotel Preanger (Jl. Asia Africa 81) and enjoy their old time charms. Have a tour inside and sample the meticulous detail of early modern day architecture here.

17.00-18.30
Walk a few blocks and find Sumber Hidangan (Jl. Braga 20-22), a classic Dutch-style bread shop. Enjoy sweet and savory snacks such as bitterballen, kaastengel dan bokkepootjes. For a more natural and relaxing ambiance, drive up north to Padma Hotel (Jl. Rancabentang) where you can enjoy an afternoon tea with a view of beautiful valley.

19.30-24.00 Dinner and Late night activities
Tizi’s (Jl Kidang Pananjung 3) that is famous among old school folks offers classic western style menu (mostly steak), while Burangrang food place (Jl. Burangrang) offers a wide array of food including the legendary San Fransisco martabak (sweet pancake) and other tasty snacks that will whet your appetite. Other options are the all-time favorites Perkedel Bondon (fried potato cake) and Hadori satay located just behind the train station. End the day by a late night stroll at Braga Street.

Day 2

9.00-11.00 Walking Tour – City Hall – Ice Cream PT. Rasa

11.30 Another round for culinary drive-Home
After checking out from the hotel, drive your car to Sweetheart (Jl. Bawean or Jl. RE Martadinata 138-140) for its yummy nougat roll and chocolate wafer, Batagor Riri (Jl. Burangrang) for its delicious fried tofu with fish filling, Siomay Tulen (Jl. Situ Indah 4) for siumay or Chinese Dumpling, or Soes Merdeka (Jl. Merdeka 25-29) for rum éclair. End the journey by having the ultimate Sundanese lunch treat at Ma Uneh (Jl. Terasana 132 Pajajaran).

Enjoy Bandung from another view and let the old charms embrace you, for this is ‘Paris van Java’. Don’t let the traffic fool you as most of them only happen in very touristy places around Jalan Dago. Please send your fantastic snaps to images@burufly.com or your social profile on burufly.com so Buruflyers around the world could see the wonderful Indonesia.
