The Gili Islands are three idyllic gilis, Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, located off the west coast of Lombok, a paradise for lovers of soft, crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches and tropical coral reefs. The Gilis gained popularity in the late 80’s and early 90’s and still remains a popular fixture. The name of “Gili Islands” is rather redundant as gili simply means “small island” in “sasak” language but the name has stuck and is universally used and understood in Lombok.
Gili Islands is perfect for every type of traveler, whether you are a backpacker on a tight budget or a jet setter looking to be luxuriously pampered. Each island has its very own distinct personality and ambiance, ranging from slow and easy, laid-back vibes to a sand-shuffling, booty-shaking paradise. Although there is a wide range of amenities and accommodation available. The islands are very relaxed and laid-back, with countless little beach-side cafes, restaurants and bars serving a variety of tastes in local and international cuisine. The distances between the islands may seem swimming distance but do not attempt it, the currents are fierce and several visitors have died trying.
There are increasing numbers of westerners living on the Gili’s, and operating businesses ranging from dive companies to resorts. There is a strong environmental focus as the reefs were damaged in the past. While previously most people came to dive, snorkel and party, now a wider spectrum of visitors including families and couples are enjoying the islands. The focus remains on the beach and in the sea. There are also many options to wine and dine, visit a spa or hang out and meet new friends.
