The magnificent Togean Islands will shine even brighter from 23rd to 26th July 2013 when the Togean Festival gets underway. The festival spectacularly combines the natural wonders above and below the sea with the unique cultural beauty of its people.
Held for the first time in 2008, this year the festival will be participated by representatives from all cities and regencies of the Central Sulawesi Province, as well as from neighboring provinces.
One of the special highlights of the festival is the traditional diving attraction. As a tradition of the Bajau ethnic group inhabiting the islands, it will feature divers swimming in the water without any mechanical breathing apparatus, exploring the floor of the sea for over an hour.
Spread over a 90 km stretch in the middle of the Tomini Bay, the winding, hilly coastlines and equatorial waters of the Togean Islands cast a magical spell of green, yellow and blue, in all shades imaginable. Located within the Tojo Una-una district, the Togean Islands offer splendors in its rich and pristine underwater appeals.
The fascinating islands can be reached from the city of Gorontalo by direct public boat, which operates twice a week. Togean islands can also be reached overland from South Sulawesi’s Tana Toraja (Rantepao) via Mangkutana, Pendolo, Tentena and Poso to Ampana for about 14 hours drive. There are regular flights from Jakarta and Makassar to Gorontalo served among others by Sriwijaya Airand Lion Air.
