When one looks out from Singapore’s high towers across the Straits onto the Indonesian islands, there the islands of Batam and Bintan appear very inviting, basking in the sun. Lying less than one hour by fast ferry from Singapore, the islands promise a completely contrasting environment from that of busy metropolitan Singapore.
The island of Batam forms part of the Riau Archipelago located on the east coast of Sumatra. Its proximity to Singapore, one of the most important trade and financial centers in Southeast Asia, has propelled Batam’s development into one of Indonesia’s prominent industrial, trade and commercial zones. With increased investments, the island’s infrastructure and facilities continue to expand as its modern airport, docks and ship yards prepare the island to take on its role as an important port and industrial center in the region.
In recent years, Batam has become a popular destination for visitors from Singapore and Malaysia, as well as from Asian and European visitors who flock to the island for its first class golf courses, duty free shopping, beach resorts and delicious seafood restaurants. Frequent daily ferry services are available from Singapore since it takes only 30 minutes to get to Batam. Regular air services link the island with Jakarta, Pekanbaru and Medan on the main island of Sumatra, and frequent ferries link Batam to Tanjung Pinang, capital of the province of the Riau Islands.
Given its strategic location and its tourism facilities, Batam is transforming itself into a sophisticated recreation ground for international visitors. With the increasing flow of leisure and business travelers, Batam now turns its attention to the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) markets. Surrounded by many beautiful islands in the Riau Archipelago, Batam is ready to welcome MICE participants for business and conventions, given its unique attractions and warm hospitality.
