In its heydays the city was known as “Parijs van Java” or Paris of Java, where until today its many tropical art-deco buildings attest of its importance. Bandung made world history by hosting the first Asian-African Conference in 1955 which brought together for the first time ever, the newly independent nations in Asia and Africa. The Conference successfully produced the Dasasila Bandung or the Bandung Charter that laid the foundation for the Non-Aligned movement and international cooperation among the Asian and African nations. The Asian-African Conference, held at the “Gedung Merdeka”, established Bandung as the first city in Indonesia to have hosted an international convention.
