The G20 Summit Contributes to Indonesia's GDP

G20 Communication and Media Team

Jakarta, (November 3, 2022) - The organization of the G20 Summit has provided many direct benefits for Indonesia. Its contribution is predicted to reach US$ 533 million, or around IDR 7.4 trillion in gross domestic product (GDP), including a boost in domestic consumption by up to IDR 1.7 trillion. "We have held many events since December 1 last year. A total of 438 events took place in 25 cities across Indonesia, with various levels of meetings. All of these events have had significant benefits, particularly in driving economic growth," said Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Susiwijono Moegiarso in an online press briefing titled "#G20Updates: 'Benefits of G20 for Society,' on Thursday (November 3, 2022).

He added that the entire series of activities, both at the main and side events of the G20 Presidency, has absorbed up to 33,000 workers, especially from sectors such as transportation, accommodation, MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions), and MSMEs, as every event always involves MSMEs.

"When compared to the annual meeting in 2018, the real benefits could be 1.5 to 2 times greater, or even more," he explained.

Susiwijono mentioned that another noticeable effect was the economic recovery in Bali. For example, from August to late September, there were about 15 ministerial meetings, and traffic has increased by more than 70% compared to previous transportation traffic.

"The impact in Bali, although we haven't fully seen the Regional Gross Domestic Product (PDRB) yet, from transportation traffic in Bali, it has been confirmed that the occupancy rate has surpassed pre-pandemic levels. Similarly, for the supporting sectors of side events," he said.

In line with Susiwijono, Expert Staff on Maritime Resource Utilization at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs (Kemenko PMK), Nyoman Shuida, stated that the G20 has had a direct and maximum impact on society, such as an increase in foreign tourists by 1.8 million – 3.6 million and the creation of 600,000 – 700,000 new jobs, supported by the performance of the culinary, fashion, and craft sectors.

"G20 must bring maximum benefits to the Indonesian people, especially in strengthening the economy post-pandemic," he stated.

He revealed that, in the hospitality business sector, the hotel occupancy rate, especially in Bali, has significantly increased compared to the pandemic period in 2021.

"According to the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021, the hotel occupancy rate was only around 20%, but now it has reached around 70%. Employment absorption in the tourism sector, especially hotels, has reached about 80% of workers who were laid off during the pandemic," he said.

Nyoman stated that the consistency of these achievements must still be monitored, stabilized, and efforts should be made to improve them, especially after the G20, considering the ongoing global crises such as inflation, food crises, energy, and others that also impact Indonesia.

"We hope that the G20 Summit can formulate significant policies and help address issues related to human and cultural development in Indonesia," said Nyoman.

This projection is still a prediction of the potential benefits resulting from the G20 event and Presidency in Indonesia. The real achievement can only be confirmed after conducting a post-event analysis once the G20 activities are completed.
