Traditional Pacu Jalur Festival
The Pacu Jalur Festival is an annual cultural event in Kuantan Singingi Regency, celebrating a centuries-old tradition. Originating in the 17th century, it began as a race between villagers using large boats, known as jalur, to transport harvests. Over time, it evolved into the Pacu Jalur competition. Initially held to mark Islamic holidays, it later continued under Dutch colonial rule to celebrate the Dutch Queen’s birthday and, since Indonesia’s independence, it has been a highlight of the Independence Day celebrations.
The jalur boat, made from a single tree trunk, is 25 to 40 meters long and holds 45-60 rowers. The festival officially began in 1903, and this year marks the 121st edition. The Pacu Jalur Festival is a vital effort to preserve this cultural heritage, ensuring that future generations continue to enjoy and honor the traditions of Kuantan Singingi.
