Indonesia's First Ultra-Fast Charging Station Ready for G20 Summit in Bali

Various events of the G20 Indonesia Presidency 2022 have already begun! Throughout this historical global meeting, there are several important topics that will be discussed among 21,000 delegates from all over the world. With the theme “Recover Together, Recover Stronger”, several topics relating to the economy, such as financial stability, trades, policies, and sustainability, become the focus of G20 Indonesia. As the summit of G20 will be held in Nusa Dua, Bali, from 15 to 16 November 2022, the Indonesian government has prepared 60 units of ultra-fast charging stations to accommodate electric vehicles (EV) charging in Bali. These charging stations were built to support the G20 Summit. Let’s take a look at some facts about these charging stations below!

1. Electric vehicles to support G20 Summit

During G20 2022, about 500 units of electric cars will be deployed to escort all the delegates participating in the summit of this special event in Nusa Dua, Bali. The use of these electric vehicles during the G20 is expected to encourage the widespread adoption of electric vehicles in the country. According to the Head of the Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI) Center for Advocacy and Community Affairs and transportation observer Djoko Setijowarno, the use of electric vehicles on G20 can be a perfect momentum to show Indonesia’s serious effort in encouraging the use of alternative energy in the future. He also adds that the use of alternative energy, along with the efforts to utilize new and renewable sources of energy, can lessen the impact of climate change. Moreover, during the launch of the Collaborative Program for the Electric Vehicle Ecosystem Development in Jakarta on 22 February 2022, President Joko Widodo has asserted that the Indonesian government will commit a full effort to shift towards new and renewable energy. To usher the electric vehicle ecosystem, the Indonesian government has collaborated with several companies, including the State Electricity Company (PLN), which has aided the development of the nation’s first ultra-fast charging stations.

2. Reducing carbon footprint

There are many goals that the Indonesian government aimed to fulfill from the provision of these charging stations. One of them is to reduce the carbon footprint of the country. According to a report from Carbon Brief, electric vehicles considerably have lower emissions compared to conventional vehicles. However, the report also found that the benefits of electric vehicles wouldn’t be that much impactful if the country where the vehicle parts were made still relies on coal-intensive electricity generation, as the pollution affects sustainability. Therefore, the Indonesian government makes sure that the effort to reduce the country’s carbon footprint is not only done by encouraging the use of electric vehicles, but also by reducing the usage of coal through certain policies and regulations. In addition, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia is also committed to reducing the nation’s carbon footprint. As the tourism industry accounts for about 8% of the world's carbon, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia Sandiaga Uno will start applying zero-carbon and sustainable tourism by implementing various programs that prioritize environmental sustainability, including carbon footprint offsetting calculation in many destinations across the country.

3. A step forward to care for environmental sustainability

The Indonesian government and PLN have planned to build more charging station facilities all over the country to pursue environmental sustainability. The plan was confirmed by the President Director of PLN Darmawan Prasodjo. He promised that the number of charging stations continues to increase from year to year. So far, the charging stations that have been built across Indonesia have reached 267 units as of February 2022. For this year's target, PLN has aimed to build an additional 580 units of charging stations. Darmawan further adds that PLN will not just provide charging stations in various regions across Indonesia. The company will also build battery charging for public electric vehicles as well as home charging stations soon. Furthermore, the Indonesian government is also planning to convert gasoline-fueled motorcycles into electric motorcycles, as a huge step to reach better environmental sustainability.
