The whole procession actually started from Tuesday 14 May 2019 to Sunday 19 May 2019. Rituals are being held according to the annual tradition, initially by obtaining the holy water from Umbul Jumprit spring in Temanggung. The next ritual will be getting the flames of eternal fire from Mrapen in Grobogan. Both will then be kept safely at Mendut temple in Magelang. The next day, the water and the flame will be escorted from Mendut Temple to Borobudur Temple to join the Vesak Day ceremonials, before the lantern festival starts.

Vesak commemorates three of the most important events in the life of Buddha Siddhartha Gautama, also known in Indonesia as Tri Suci Waisak. The first one is the Birth of Prince Siddhartha in the Lumbini Gardens. The second is the enlightenment in which Prince Siddhartha became the Buddha in Bodhgaya at the age of 35, and the third is the passing of Gautama Buddha at Kusinara at the age of 80 in 543 BC. Therefore, Vesak is also known as simply Buddha’s day.
Being held in the same month as Ramadan also made this year’s event even more special, as everyone would gather together to simply celebrate moments of joy. Be sure to join and experience the unique ambiance!
