No.71/SP/TKM-AISFORUM2023/10/2023

Badung, October 12, 2023 – The 2023 Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum Summit resulted in several agreements. In the tourism sector, which is part of the blue economy, Indonesia encourages sustainability as a key strategic aspect. Experience Indonesia in 360.

The common goals include achieving climate change mitigation and adaptation, blue economy, marine plastic waste management, and good maritime governance.

This was stated by the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy/Head of the Tourism and Creative Economy Agency (Menparekraf/Kabaparekraf) Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno after attending the 2023 AIS Forum Summit on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Centre (BNDCC).

"Nearly 50 percent of the 51 island and archipelagic countries participating in the AIS Forum 2023 consider tourism as a sector with a significant contribution to the economy. Therefore, the concept of sustainable tourism has become a very strategic key," said Minister Sandiaga.

Sandiaga revealed that all island and archipelagic countries face common challenges that require strong cooperation in the spirit of collaboration to overcome them.

Indonesia also shared best practices that have been implemented, one of which is the carbon footprint calculation, where tourists can calculate the carbon emissions generated from their travel activities.

The carbon footprint calculation is then converted into a monetary value, which is used to support positive programs such as tree planting, renewable energy, and eco-tourism development.

In collaboration with local governments, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has designated locations for the implementation of this program, including Plataran Menjangan in West Bali National Park, Tembudan Berseri Mangrove in Berau, Tiga Warna Beach in Clungup Mangrove Conservation-Malang, Peramun Hill in Belitung, and Klawalu Mangrove Tourism Park in Sorong.

"Indonesia is providing leadership with the carbon calculator that we have implemented with the mangrove planting we have done, and this becomes a showcase," said Sandiaga.

The Carbon Footprint concept, according to Sandiaga, is also reflected in the Declaration of Solidarity of Island and Archipelagic States, signed at the conference. This declaration expresses the commitment of island and archipelagic countries to enhance cooperation in addressing shared issues, based on the principles of solidarity, equality, and inclusiveness.

"All participating countries agreed to encourage collaboration and innovation to address real issues such as plastic waste, as well as climate change mitigation and adaptation," said Sandiaga.

President Joko Widodo previously expressed that the leaders of the countries present at the 2023 AIS Forum Summit agreed to uphold three principles outlined in the Declaration of Solidarity of Island and Archipelagic States as the foundation for enhancing cooperation.

Indonesia fully supports the declaration as a demonstration of its commitment to fostering cooperation that has already been established so that island and archipelagic countries worldwide can become more solid in facing various global challenges through collaboration.

These challenges include rising sea levels, marine pollution from waste and waste, which are increasingly felt and threaten not only the sustainability of the sea but also the sovereignty and unity of nations.
