Probolinggo is a city on the north coast of East Java province. Like most of northern East Java, the city has a large Madurese population in addition to many ethnically Javanese people. It is located on one of the major highways across Java, and has a harbor that is heavily used by fishing vessels. Probolinggo is one of the gateways to visit the majestic Bromo, Tengger Semeru mountains in East Java.

Places of Interest Around Probolinggo


Probolinggo is located on the province of East Java. The area only covers around 57 square kilometers, with the population of an estimated 223,159 people. The majority of the population is of Madurese and Javanese ethnicity. The quaint small town is formerly known for its grapes, which rarely grows in the area, and instead, was replaced by the famous manalagi mangoes.

Probolinggo is a port town mainly docked by fishing vessels. It poses a quiet, idyllic charm compared to its neighboring metropolitan city, with its coastlines warm and peaceful. Situated near the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park, the area is frequented by transiting tourists with great interests in the local nature. With miles of stunning natural landscape to offer, Probolinggo is a hidden gem in the East Java region.

Probolinggo Museum

The museum acts as the center for the city’s cultural scene, as well as for learning the local history. It exhibits relics, both original and replicas, from the Dutch colonies era dating back to the ancient Hindu-Buddha kingdoms. The local government currently aims for a collection expansion for the museum.

Candi Jabung

This temple is a remnant of the Majapahit Kingdom, who once reigned over the majority of Indonesia. Built in the 14th century, the building is made out of red bricks with intricate carvings all over it. It was meant to be a tombstone for a member of the royal family at the time.

Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park
