Indonesia receives appreciation for the achievements of the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community

The delegates present at the session congratulated the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community's achievements in 2023 under the guidance of the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenko PMK RI).

According to the report presented at the ministerial meeting, it was agreed to submit to the 43rd ASEAN Summit Forum for the adoption of 6 declarations and the production of 23 documents.

The documents and statements of the socio-cultural community focused on several issues, including migrant worker protection, inclusive development for persons with disabilities, gender equality and family development, preschool care and education, strengthening social assistance, regional health structures, and promoting resilience to climate change.

This demonstrates ASEAN's strong commitment to working together to address emerging challenges and ensure that all parties benefit from regional integration.

The session was chaired by the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, Muhadjir Effendy.

During the session, the Vietnamese delegation, represented by the Deputy Minister of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs Nguyen Van Hoi, expressed support for the community priorities set under ASEAN’s 2023 Chairmanship.

According to Nguyen Van Hoi, Vietnam is accelerating the implementation of the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Master Plan 2025, integrated with national projects to achieve the objectives of the ASEAN Cultural Community.

He added that to address issues such as the pandemic, climate change, and the loss of biodiversity, more coordinated efforts among member countries are needed to promote clean, green, and sustainable growth.

In addition, regarding human resources, with increasing intraregional labor mobility, ASEAN will enhance labor recognition mechanisms and processes, promote cooperation programs, training to improve qualifications and skills, and further enhance and guarantee the rights of migrant workers.

“This is also one of Indonesia’s key initiatives to strengthen regional cooperation on migrant worker protection, which is strongly supported by Vietnam,” he said.

At the end of the ASCC-30 meeting, the ministers/head of delegations issued a joint statement and agreed on the content of the report to be submitted to ASEAN Senior Leaders at the 43rd ASEAN Summit to be held from September 5–7, 2023. (Isma/Donna/Vira)
