No.40/SP/TKM-AISFORUM2023/10/2023

Badung, October 9, 2023 – The Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum Summit serves as a pivotal moment for a collective movement to build the world’s blue economy. Experience Indonesia in 360.

The blue economy will drive recovery and transformation, underpinned by environmental sustainability and preservation.

This was emphasized by the Deputy for Tourism and Creative Economy of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves), Odo Manuhutu, during a media gathering event in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Sunday evening (October 8, 2023).

"The benefits of this forum may not be immediately felt, but in 10 to 15 years, this forum will make a tangible contribution to the world, including Indonesia," he said.

To achieve a more sustainable future for the oceans, he added, island and archipelagic nations must develop smart and innovative nature-based solutions.

He hopes that the meeting at the AIS Forum Summit will foster strong collaboration in tackling the multi-faceted challenges in the region.

Odo emphasized the importance of collaboration to address shared challenges faced by AIS countries, particularly in four key areas: climate change mitigation and adaptation, blue economy development, marine plastic waste management, and good maritime governance.

At the same time, Usman Kansong, Director General of Information and Public Communication at the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kemkominfo), added that the meeting agenda will focus on three key aspects: blue economy development, climate change challenges, and strengthening solidarity among island and archipelagic nations.

"As Mr. Odo mentioned, through this forum, we aim to build solidarity among island and archipelagic nations to tackle environmental threats. So, when an environmental disaster strikes, the first nations affected are the island nations. For instance, some island nations are predicted to sink if global warming is not addressed. We aim to build solidarity among these nations in recovering the global environmental situation while enhancing the blue economy. The blue economy will drive economic progress through sustainable practices," he stated.

Reinforcing what Usman and Odo conveyed, Sora Lokita, Assistant Deputy for Maritime Zone Delimitation and Border Areas at Kemenko Marves, added that the AIS Forum Summit will be a landmark moment for all stakeholders to find real solutions to the significant impacts of climate change on the maritime sector.

"The key principles are interdependence, mutual aid, and mutual benefit. These principles are adapted from the concept of 'gotong royong,' which weaves together the bonds of island and archipelagic communities," he explained.

Due to their shared geographical conditions and challenges, the AIS Forum Summit 2023 provides an essential platform for island and archipelagic nations to exchange information and seek solutions to common challenges, such as climate change, marine governance, and pollution.

"We must be in a forum where we can exchange ideas, share best practices, share knowledge, and support each other in this context," said Oki, a nickname for Sora Lokita. (Ismadi/TR/Elvira Inda Sari)
