Jakarta, August 31, 2023 – The 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta will result in the ASEAN Concord IV. "One of the most important outcomes of the 43rd Summit is ASEAN Concord IV, which is currently under discussion," he said.
Indonesia will prepare the ASEAN Vision 2045 during its Chairmanship through this charter. "Indonesia will provide guidance for ASEAN through ASEAN Concord IV, which will be a new vision for ASEAN post-2025," he added.
The ASEAN Foreign Ministers have agreed to begin discussions on ASEAN Concord IV. It is hoped that the final draft will be presented at the 43rd Summit, which will take place from September 5-7, to receive approval from ASEAN leaders.
It is worth noting that ASEAN has produced two declarations known as Bali Concord I in 1976 and Bali Concord II in 2003.
Bali Concord I is the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) that governs the behavior between member states to promote peaceful ways of resolving disputes among them, rather than using violent actions.
In 2003, Bali Concord II was born as an ASEAN agreement to build a community based on political and security, economic, and socio-cultural pillars. This declaration led to the ASEAN Charter, which established the association as a rules-based organization, and also laid the groundwork for the formation of the ASEAN Community.
Meanwhile, the 2011 ASEAN Summit in Nusa Dua resulted in the Bali Declaration on ASEAN Community in a Global Community of Nations, which is referred to as Bali Concord III. The spirit of this declaration is to ensure ASEAN's active participation and contribution in addressing various fundamental global issues that are occurring in the present.
On the other hand, Rolliansyah emphasized that the issue of Myanmar will be discussed carefully at the 43rd ASEAN Summit. ASEAN still wants to help the people of Myanmar lead normal lives. "ASEAN is paying attention to the dynamics in Myanmar while respecting their sovereignty," he said.
Last July, Indonesia's Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi also expressed similar sentiments. "ASEAN continues to work hard, not only to be a convening power but also to make ASEAN a main contributor to peace and stability in the region," said Retno Marsudi in a press conference after the 56th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Jakarta.
She referred to the ability to catalyze collective action by relevant actors to address global and regional development challenges. The Foreign Minister used the term "convening power" to emphasize the need to prioritize a culture of communication and dialogue. (Eko Budiono/Budiana/Elvira Inda Sari)
