Dry spices such as star anise, cardamom, cinnamon, and nutmeg are wrapped in a thin cloth bag and then added to the chicken broth. The finely ground spices are sautéed until fragrant before being added to the chicken broth, and cook until the chicken is tender. Then the chicken is removed, drained, and shredded coarsely. Milk, mashed potatoes, and sugar are added to the chicken broth while allowing it to boil. After that, the broth is strained, and the spice bag is set aside. The chicken broth is boiled again over low heat until it boils.
