Tari Yosim Pancar

Yosim Pancar, commonly abbreviated as Yospan, is a traditional dance originating from Papua, Indonesia. It is a social and friendship dance performed by young men and women. Yospan combines two traditional Papuan dances, Yosim and Pancar. It is a pair dance performed by both male and female dancers, who can also dance in groups facing each other in a single line.

Distinctive Features

The movements in Yosim Pancar are dynamic, lively, and flow in harmony with the accompanying music. The choreography features simple yet symbolically meaningful movements.

Costumes

  • Shirt: White or made from tree bark.
  • Men’s Appearance: Usually shirtless with their bodies painted with traditional Papuan ethnic motifs.
  • Rumbai Skirt: Made from roots or plant fibers, used as skirts or long tube-like garments.
  • Hand Bracelets: Made of woven materials with vibrant feathers.
  • Arm Bracelets: Specifically worn by male dancers using similar materials.
  • Crown: Decorated with feathers of the bird of paradise, made from patterned fabric or feather embellishments.
  • Head Covering: Made from natural materials or cloth decorated with Papuan ethnic beadwork.
  • Face Paint: White or other colors with traditional Papuan patterns.
  • Long Necklaces: Made from natural materials such as seeds or small shells.
  • Ankle Accessories: Bracelets made from the same rumbai material or adorned with brightly colored feathers.

Musical Accompaniment

The Yospan dance is typically accompanied by a mix of traditional instruments such as the 6-string guitar, ukulele, bass, and tifa (traditional drum), playing popular songs in Papuan languages.
