Coral Eye Bangka

Coral Eye is a unique boutique resort located on Bangka Island, North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Nestled between a lush tropical jungle and a long, white sandy beach, it lies in the heart of the Coral Triangle, the global epicenter of marine biodiversity.

History and Purpose

Originally founded in 2009 as a marine outpost by four young marine biologists, Coral Eye aimed to create a co-working space where universities and students could exchange ideas and develop projects on tropical marine environments. In 2013, after constructing a diving center, Coral Eye opened its doors to tourism, blending science with a passion for the sea. This initiative allowed them to finance environmental projects, offer scholarships to students, and better support local communities.

Facilities and Activities

Coral Eye offers a variety of facilities and activities, including:

  • Accommodation: Villas and rooms designed for simplicity, relaxation, and comfort.

  • Diving: With more than 50 world-class dive sites, the archipelago offers several different diving spots, including volcanic sand areas, sloping reefs, pinnacles, and mangroves. These sites support rare species such as pygmy seahorses, leaf scorpion fish, flamboyant cuttlefish, coconut octopus, harlequin crabs, frogfish, a vast variety of nudibranchs, and occasionally dugongs.

  • Activities: The resort is ideal for organizing workshops, field courses, seminars, or as a base for developing projects.

  • Architecture: Designed by Studio ARC.S Milano, the central structure integrates with the surrounding environment, using local materials and techniques to create a modern and avant-garde structure that offers guests comfort without negatively affecting the surrounding environment.

Sustainability Initiatives

Since its opening, Coral Eye has emphasized environmental stewardship, prioritizing sustainable practices to minimize the negative environmental impact of daily operations, support local communities, and enhance guest experiences. They buy most of their fish from Bangka Island’s fishermen using single-line fishing methods, which are less destructive to marine habitats. They also support the No-Trash Triangle Initiative to keep the environment clean and create a sustainable waste management system on Bangka Island. Additionally, they are founding members of the Bangka Conservation Fund, created to fight illegal mining and promote sustainable practices.
