Museum Mandar Majene

Museum Mandar Majene is a museum located in Majene Regency, West Sulawesi, Indonesia. The museum was established following the decision of the First Cultural Seminar on August 2, 1984, and is situated in the former Majene General Hospital, which was built during the Dutch colonial era. Initially managed by a foundation or private entity, it was later transferred to become the Regional Museum of Majene Regency Level II in 1989. The museum is under the ownership of the Mandar Regency Government and is managed by UPTD Museum Mandar.

The museum showcases a variety of objects that illustrate the culture of the Mandar community, such as wedding attire of the noble Mara’dia (King) and traditional nobles or Topia, items brought by the groom for the bride, traditional games like ganrang, sattung, kanjilo, and pakkaracangang. Miniature traditional houses also display the caste differences between nobles and commoners during the kingdom era. Information about the structure of the Pamboang, Sendana, Banggae kingdoms, and the genealogies of the Balanipa Mandar kings, from the first king I Manyambungi, also known as Todzilaling, to the 53rd king I Puang Monda’, can be found in this museum. Other collections include traditional cooking utensils, traditional weapons, and traditional fishing equipment used by the Mandar tribe. Additionally, various silk sarong motifs worn by sailors and silk sarong weaving tools can be found in this museum.

By Air: The nearest airport is in Mamuju, West Sulawesi, followed by a three-hour drive to Majene using a rental car.
By Land: If you choose to drive, Museum Mandar Majene can be accessed via various land routes from nearby cities such as Makassar or Parepare. Public transportation is also available to connect these cities to Museum Mandar Majene. The location is about 1 km from the Majene Regent's Office.
