PRESS RELEASE
G20 SUMMIT AIS FORUM 2023 COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA TEAM
No.50/SP/TKM-AISFORUM2023/10/2023
Badung, October 9, 2023 – The Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum Summit will focus on tangible initiatives that directly impact communities in island and archipelagic countries. Experience Indonesia in 360.
"This AIS Forum is a concrete forum. It is not merely a platform for speeches, but it also focuses on grassroots initiatives developed based on input from communities on the ground for the advancement of island and archipelagic countries (AIS Forum participating nations)," said Deputy for Maritime Sovereignty and Energy Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves), Jodi Mahardi, during a press conference at the AIS Forum Summit Media Center, Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) 1, Bali, Monday (9/10/2023).
Therefore, Jodi continued, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the AIS Forum Secretariat continues to develop programs that can be implemented in island and archipelagic countries.
"We also have regional directors of the AIS Forum, including in Madagascar, Fiji, and Barbados. Their role is to communicate with AIS Forum community members to gather insights and develop programs that support the AIS Forum Secretariat. This proves that the reach of this forum is truly global, not just limited to one region," he explained.
The Indonesian government, Jodi emphasized, fully supports the AIS Forum and is committed to promoting its existence and implementation, particularly by encouraging the participation of young people and startups to collaborate and share solutions to challenges faced by island and archipelagic nations.
"Island and archipelagic countries have a resilient and innovative character. Indonesia believes that through this forum, AIS Forum countries can demonstrate their capacity to solve problems independently without relying on external assistance. This can be achieved by strengthening solidarity and sharing the results of our innovations," he said.
The Indonesian government also supports AIS Forum programs, including funding initiatives. To date, Indonesia has contributed a funding commitment of USD 5 million.
"In 2019, Indonesia contributed USD 1 million for several purposes, such as establishing the secretariat, implementing cooperation programs, and strengthening collaboration among countries. We created a knowledge-sharing platform and workshops involving youth, innovators, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to support the blue economy," Jodi said.
The AIS Forum serves as a cooperation platform for island and archipelagic nations, aiming to strengthen collaboration in addressing four global challenges: climate change mitigation and adaptation, the blue economy, marine plastic waste management, and maritime governance.
Jodi added that the AIS Forum focuses on concrete actions and has prepared various programs to ensure its continued development and impact on the communities of island and archipelagic nations.
The 2023 AIS Forum Summit is expected to result in a Leaders’ Declaration among participating countries. "But the most important aspect of the Leaders’ Declaration is to unify our voices first, acknowledging the urgent needs within the AIS Forum and promoting cooperation in areas such as the blue economy, marine pollution, climate change mitigation, and ocean governance," Jodi stated.
